T.R. Doongaji hails from Nagpur which is the city where Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata started his first venture, Empress Mills, in 1877. At the age of six years old, Doongaji's cousin would accompany him to the temple where, before entering, he would ask the young man to bow his head to a bust that was of "the founder" placed on an elevated pedestal. "I did what he asked me to," Doongaji says. Doongaji. "Today, I realise that my entire identity is this name." A J.N. Tata academic, he served 52 years (42 in executive capacity) working for Tata Group which included a managing director of three company groups. companies.Jamsetji set up a provident fund scheme for his employees. In the past certain politicians in Nagpur were in the process of changing the name of the hall for convocation at Nagpur University, the J.N. Tata Hall, to a local leader's name. A friend from Nagpur called Doongaji to ask whether he was aware of it. Doongaji delved into the Tata Central Archives to see how the hall got the name. "We found an indication that Empress Mills Nagpur had contributed towards the cost of the hall We also had the complete record. We have recently won the case in the High Court. I will not let anyone to do anything in Tata's identity as well as his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Property">property</a>," Says her proud Parsi.

Very few companies can command this level of loyalty from their workers. And, Doongaji attributes it to the management at Tata Group. "Between the founder and Cyrus [Mistry], there have been four chairmen--three were knighted and one is a Bharat Ratna," states Doongaji. "How many groups can claim that kind of leadership?
</p>

It all began when Jamsetji bought a ten-acre parcel of marshy property from the Nagpur King and established Empress Mills. (It was registered at Bombay in 1874 under the name of Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company Limited. Jamsetji had established a trading company in 1868.)
</p>
<p>
Jamsetji did not want his workers to be working in the conditions of squalor that the the cotton factories of Lancashire. So for Empress Mills, he ensured adequate ventilation, and also had an apparatus installed for humidifying air. Sprinklers were set up to lessen the damage caused due to accidental fires. He also established an insurance scheme for provident funds which was it was first-of-its kind in India, and an accident compensation fund.

When Jamsetji came back to Bombay, he had made enough money, and he turned his attention to buying property. In the next few years, he was one of the wealthiest people in the world. While visiting the US at the request of industrialist George Westinghouse, Jamsetji saw the hydroelectric development at Niagara Falls. Jamsetji had been planning a hydroelectric project in India and the visit set his decision. The Lonavala and Khandala areas of the Western Ghats, which gets one of the largest rainfalls around the globe and has the appropriate kind of terrain, canyons and slopes, he started the work for the Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company. Gigantic pipes forced water up Khopoli, the highest mountain in Khopoli, where at the power house the water would be transformed into electricity. The project proved to be a game-changer, as it powered the growing city of Bombay.

Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company was declared a public concern on November 7, 1910, and it started the project on February 11, 1915 when Lord Willingdon governor of Bombay established the project. "Today, the major chunk of our power is being supplied to industries, hospitals and residences," states Rajesh G. Naik, director of maintenance and operations, Tata Power. The total production capacity for the facility is 447MW.

The most popular feature of this project will be the huge 14-acre gardens in Lonavala. Jamsetji took an interest in gardening and brought home plants and seeds from across the globe. When the steel plant at Jamshedpur was in construction and he wrote a lengthy letter to his son, Dorabji and his family about the rapid growth of the varieties of trees he wanted to plant on the site. Said Vivek Vishwasrao, head of biodiversity at Tata Power: "We fall in the northern region of the Western Ghats which is a important bio-diversity hotspot. A few of the species of plants, animals and birds we find in this region aren't found elsewhere in the world." In the same way, the gorgeous Tata Baug constructed in 1891, on 22 acres in Navsari, is maintained by Dr Rohinton Avari. She holds an advanced doctorate in landscape gardening.

Jamsetji was An "omnivorous reader", and was a lover of Dickens and Thackeray. "He was fond of driving, was a great judge of horseflesh and duly pleased with the quality of his horses, whether Arabs, English Hackneys or Hungarians and of his smart turnout. Sometimes, he was a fan of boating and sailing and entertaining his pals at picnic parties," writes Frank Harris in his book Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata: A Memoir of His Personal Life.

In the realm of 'firsts jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy's achievements stand out. From obtaining India's initial pilot's licence , to the creation of the first cancer center in the nation, J.R.D. Tata set the stage for the development of India. Tata's father R.D. Tata was a nephew of Jamsetji's mother, and her mother was Suzanne Briere, a French citizen. Tata was born in Paris and spent his childhood in France. After his father's passing, the son of his father became a director at Tata Sons at the age of 22.

J.R.D. was appointed Tata Sons chairman in 1938 in the year 1938, when he was 34. The group had 14 companies that time. When he left in 1991 it was 95. However, his contribution went far past Tata Group and its businesses. For instance, he helped Homi Bhabha establish India's Atomic Energy Programme. The brightest star of the companies J.R.D. created was Tata Airlines (which later became Air India), as it quickly earned a global recognition as one of the best carriers. "J.R.D. would always claim"that Air India was his first love, and I would hope to hear him claim the same about Tata Steel. Tata Steel was his second," says J.J. Irani, former managing director of Tata Steel. "He would laugh at that, but he never gave me an answer."
