PWD: Public Works Department

PWD refers to Public Works Department. It is a Govt. of India department that deals with building and maintenanceof government infrastructures such as roads government construction, bridges and irrigation systems, and much more. It is a central authority which is accountable for all public sector activities in India. To arrange the safe drinking water for the citizens and to fix broken pipes pipesis equally the responsibility of the PWD. Furthermore, if there is any damage to any government hospitals, schools roads, or schools repairs are made by PWD.

PWD is found in every state of India. It is divided into sub-divisions, divisions, and sections. In all states, it is responsible for almost the same work and responsibilities as the design and construction of all public projects carried out by Government as well as the development and construction of roads, security and infrastructure on roads and highways, maintenanceand restructuring of governmentbuildings, etc. This type of work was formerly was performed by the military in India. At the beginning of the 19th century, the task of public works was transferred to a separate area of Indian Civil Service.
